How to use border strips and journal cards to customize your scrapbook

By now, I’m hoping you’ve seen the Wonder Designer Coordinates by Lauren Hinds collection and the Everyday Birthday 2″ Border Strips by Lauren Hinds. If not, you can see close ups in last week’s blog post. Today, I have a special treat for you. Mindy Catlett created a variety of pages with the same photos to show how swapping out border strips and journal cards can quickly change the look of your page.
One of the simplest and fastest ways to personalize a scrapbook page is to use different border strips and journal cards. We’ve put together several examples you can use for inspiration!
Red Birthday Theme
Mindy took a set of birthday photos and created quick pages using the Slip-in Multi-Pocket Pages. In this first example, she brought out the brightness of the photos with the cute multi-color polka dot border strips. Then she took one of the Everyday Birthday 2″ Border Strips and trimmed the wrapped gifts from it and added it to a journal card for a fun accent. Notice she used the extra piece from the journal card in the photo below so she could use a square photo in the 4×6 slot.
Here’s the same pages with different border strips and the undecorated journal card. Still a cute page! Notice how the red in the photos really stand out now.
Bright Yellow Birthday Theme
With these photos, Mindy chose to pull out the yellow in the boy’s shirt and on the blanket by using yellow border strips and journal card. A fun and bright layout.
Neutral Birthday Theme
As much as I love the yellow, by swapping to more neutral colors for the border strips and journal card, the photos stand out more as the edges fade away. Honestly, neither look is good or bad. They both look wonderful.
Red & Yellow Balloon Bouquet Birthday Theme
In these next two examples, Mindy is stepping it up with border punches and using portions of 2″ Border Strips. I have to confess, I don’t typically think to use border punches on my pocket pages, but the Balloon Bouquet cartridge is so fun on these pages. And the combination of red and yellow helps those colors stand out in the photos.
Blue & Neutral Balloon Bouquet Birthday Theme
The blue balloons look great on the more neutral border strips and how fun are those balloons from the 2″ Border Strip on the journal card? Brilliant!
Black Multi-Color Stripe & Green Birthday Theme
This final example is mine and shows how you can mix and match border strips and journal cards. On the left side, I used the black with multi-color stripe border strip and journal card while on the right are green pieces. This allowed me to pull colors from photos on each side, and the green is in the black multi-color pieces, which pulls everything together.
