Tired of suffering from seasonal allergies and want to get ahead of the game this year? We’ve got you covered! Keep reading to learn more about allergies, how you can avoid triggering them, and how to soothe symptoms – Youngevity style!
What causes allergies?
Common allergies happen when your body overreacts to a foreign substance like pollen, launching a full immune system attack – even if that substance is harmless. (The overreaction can be life-threatening for food, medication, or venom allergies, but today we’re focusing on less dramatic instigators.) Once your immune response kicks in, histamine is released, triggering all the allergy symptoms you’re familiar with: runny nose, itchiness, headache, asthma-like symptoms, inflammation/swelling, etc.1,2
Basically, your body is trying to flush out/destroy whatever it is sensitive to, and when that allergen shows up again – especially if it’s recurring or unavoidable – you’ll experience allergy flare-ups. Today, we’re giving you all the best tips and YGY-approved product recommendations for addressing your allergies so you can breathe easier this spring and beyond.
Keep your space clean
The best way to keep pollen, dust, smoke, and pet dander from irritating you is to keep them out of your house in the first place. Frequent dusting, vacuuming, and wipe-downs can help you keep a fresh-scented home (try a DIY recipe with our essential oils!) and clear away the nasties – you will absolutely notice a difference. Especially if you live in an urban area, we recommend keeping windows closed at night to keep out pollutants and other irritants that settle close to the ground (and your windows).1,3,4 A good quality air purifier is also a must-have!
YGY’s recommended products for cleaning:
Nature Direct EnviroAir™ Hypoallergic Formula & Revitalizer Bundle – Helps eliminate odors, reduces air borne allergens (including mold spores), bacteria, and pollutants in poorly ventilated rooms.
Deep Cleanser™ Essential Oil Blend – 10ml – This 100% pure essential oil blend boasts strong antiseptic and antifungal qualities, making it ideal for addressing household grime and helping prevent the spread of harmful bacteria.
Nature Direct Glass Cleaner and Polisher Concentrate – Specially formulated for a streak-free shine, this gentle, effective cleaner brings a beautiful shine to windows, shower screens, mirrors, table tops, other glass surfaces inside your house and car.
Keep your body clean
Whenever you go out into the world, you expose your body and airways to whatever allergens and toxins are outside. If you live in a particularly smoggy area, mask up to avoid breathing in the worst of it; a high-quality mask can also help reduce the amount of airborne pollen, bacteria, and other pollutants you breathe in, too.5 When it’s time to paint, visit the dump, weed your garden, or dive into your seasonal cleaning, a mask, gloves, long sleeves/pants, and eye protection are a must – you never know what plant or mold spores are waiting for you.
As a good rule of thumb, showering after you’ve been outside is an easy step you can take to help curb allergies.3 If you’re extra sensitive or just want to be super thorough, you can also try a saline sinus rinse and gargle – this can help you feel refreshed and has actually been demonstrated to reduce viral load (which can be helpful during flu and cold season).6,7
Here’s an easy recipe for a DIY nasal rinse you can make at home using pantry staples:
- 1 cup lukewarm distilled, boiled, or purified water (NEVER USE TAP)
- 3 tsp iodide-free salt
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 neti pot (or similar application tool)
Directions: Combine salt and baking soda and store in an airtight container. Add 1 tsp of dry mixture to 1 cup distilled warm water (NO TAP) every time you want to make a fresh nasal rinse.
Supporting nutrition
As we always say, what you put in your body matters – and that applies to fighting allergies too! According to our research, there are a number of natural compounds and nutrients you can take to address allergy flare-ups. Quercetin, vitamin C, zinc, spirulina, black pepper extract, berberine, and bromelain all act as natural antihistamines; their high-antioxidant count helps them fight inflammation and oxidative stress at the cellular level.8 Likewise, probiotics bolster your immune system via your microbiome, helping your body fight off allergies.8 We also recommend extra water and foundational minerals to help soothe inflammation and replace what you lose through drainage.
You can find all of the above nutrients at Youngevity.com! Here are some additional nutritional blends and holistic health products to try:
Sinus & Allergy Support – A proprietary blend of herbs that provide sinus and allergy support.
Bliss Spray – A proprietary blend of high-antioxidant corn silk and soothing peppermint that can help you breathe easier and support better sleep.
Breath of Life™ Essential Oil Blend – This 100% pure essential oil blend may help deliver support for congestion, asthma, and chronic cough.
