Skin Healthyare you keeping you skin healthy?

The summer season always seems to come unexpectedly. You go from jackets to tank tops almost overnight! And while many love the warmer summer days, your skin isn’t always as enthusiastic. Often, you get so excited about the warm weather, that you forget to protect your skin against harmful UV rays. Not only can this result in an unpleasant sunburn, but it can also cause long-term damage to your skin. The good news is, there are many ways to keep your skin healthy all year long and help protect the largest organ in your body – your skin!

Stay hydrated

This means drinking enough water and hydrating your skin with lotions, masks and toners. Drinking enough water during the summer will prevent dehydration and help flush out toxins from your skin.  A great addition during dry summer weather is a hydrating facial mask. The Youngevity Botanical & Spa Delicious Coconut Mask delivers coconut & vitamin E to help soothe dry and dehydrated skin.

Eat antioxidant-rich foods

Free radicals produced from UV rays (ultraviolet radiation) are the biggest culprit for many skin related diseases. Although we need some UV to synthesize vitamin D and endorphins in the skin, overexposure may lead to atrophy, pigmentary changes, wrinkles, and malignancy.[1] Antioxidants are the best defense against free radical damage. The summer is a great time to add antioxidant-rich foods to your diet. Blueberries, strawberries, cherries, and many other members of the berry family are easily accessible in the summer time.

Make use of natural shades

Wear hats, sunglasses, and bring your umbrellas with you to the beach. Although sunshine is great and helps produce vitamin D in your body, over exposure can lead to sun damage. If you know you’re going to be out in the sun for an extended period of time, make sure you have shade to take a break from the sun.

Use sunscreen when necessary

While there are many debates for and against sunscreen the bottom line is, sometimes it’s necessary, especially for individuals with fair skin. However, because good quality sunscreen has such a short shelf life, it’s important to take a careful look at ingredients and expiration dates. Trader Joe’s offers great sunscreen products when the need does arise.

Remember, your skin is your body armor. Make sure to keep it hydrated and healthy, especially during hot summer days. Prevention is the key!
