A Whey Better Protein Supplement for Muscle Growth!

Is Whey Protein the best?
As far as protein supplements go, one could say I’ve had my fair share. I started taking protein supplements in college mostly because I saw everyone else drinking protein shakes after a workout. I figured it was the thing to do if I wanted to “get in shape.” Unfortunately, as a young, unexperienced gym goer, I drank a lot of the wrong stuff for a long time. Supplements that were high in sugar, contained artificial ingredients and contained low-quality protein sources. Now, I’ve found that a whey protein supplement provides the best results for muscle growth and also help individuals with weight loss goals.
More Protein
For those starting a weight loss program, your primary goal will no doubt be to lose weight, but what should be equally as important is to not lose muscle mass. When individuals are trying to lose weight, they tend to limit their calorie intake and, at times, eat less protein than they need. This makes taking a protein supplement critical; and the source of protein is very important. In a study conducted by scientists from McMaster University and the University of Birmingham, it was found that whey protein showed a greater increase in protein synthesis compared to soy protein, when given to overweight and obese adults consuming a low calorie diet.[1] When following a low-calorie diet, whey protein would be a superior source at preserving lean body mass, which would lead to more successful, long-term weight loss.
Whey protein increased body composition
Additionally, a different study looking at whey consumption in conjunction with resistance exercise, found that whey protein supplementation increased body composition in both men and women. In this particular study, published in the Journal of American College Nutrition, researchers replaced calories in ones diet with whey protein which led to an average weight loss of 9.2lbs. When whey protein was used, in conjunction with resistance exercise, there was an average increase of 4.9lbs in lean body mass.[2] When compared to soy proteins, whey protein is much more efficient at boosting muscle protein synthesis; which can lead to increased body composition.
Whey protein has been found to not only help with weight loss, but also improve overall body composition. Over the years, I too have seen improvements in my body composition from whey protein supplementation. Next time you’re shopping for a protein supplement, consider using a whey-based protein supplement to increase muscle mass and help with your weight loss goals.
