Make Over Your Skin Care Routine

Your body’s largest organ is your skin. And yet, how often do we stop and think about how best to take care of it. With summer approaching in the northern hemisphere, you may want to look at your routine and see if there are things you need to change to help your skin be its best.

Nutrients Matter

We talk a lot about nutrition for our bodies and all that it does, but our skin relies on the nutrients we provide to be health. According to WebMD, you should eat plenty of fruits and vegetables that are rich in antioxidants such as betacarotene and vitamins C, E, and A. These can help curb damage cause by free radicals that harm skin cells and cause signs of aging.

Protection is Key

One of the best ways to care for your skin it to protect it from the sun. Not just to avoid skin cancers, but to help with wrinkles, age spots, and other issues. The Mayo Clinic suggests the following for sun protection:

  • Use sunscreen. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. Apply sunscreen generously, and reapply every two hours — or more often if you’re swimming or perspiring.
  • Seek shade. Avoid the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun’s rays are strongest.
  • Wear protective clothing. Cover your skin with tightly woven long-sleeved shirts, long pants and wide-brimmed hats. Also consider laundry additives, which give clothing an additional layer of ultraviolet protection for a certain number of washings, or special sun-protective clothing — which is specifically designed to block ultraviolet rays.

Clean and Moisturize

Keeping your skin clean is important, but do so with gentleness. Use mild cleansers that won’t strip oils your skin needs. When drying your skin, patting is better than rubbing so that moisture remains on the skin. Also, make sure you moisturize with something that fits your skin type. A moisturizer that includes SPF is an added bonus to help protect your skin from the sun.
