Rewriting Your Menopause Journey, Part 1: Perspective Matters

Posted: September 4, 2025 | By: Shanon Peckham

Aging, and all the curveballs that come with it, can be intimidating and challenging. We finally get used to a “new normal” just for another one to come barging in unexpectedly, plus an entire echo chamber telling us we’re “overthinking it” or “imagining” these changes. This is especially true for women and their menopause journey. We’re here to debunk the misconceptions and give you the info you need to navigate “the big M” with confidence.

Why Perspective Matters

Let’s start with how we think, talk about, and approach menopause.

Your perspective on menopause can have a huge impact on your preparedness, comfort, and personal agency during your “pause” journey. We wouldn’t be surprised if your attitude towards it was anxious, confused, or neutral at best – and you’re not alone. AARP estimates as much as 30% of adult women don’t have the important info they need to navigate it (other estimates are even higher),1,8 while as many as 59% of women interviewed in a separate worldwide survey consider it a taboo topic entirely. Even more women believe menopause and related symptoms aren’t taken seriously.2

If it’s not taught in schools, it’s taboo to talk about, and the people who help us look after our health shrug us off, how are we supposed to understand or prepare for it? You could see where this would be a huge problem for menopause awareness and education. Let’s get one thing straight: menopause is NOT a disease or condition that needs “curing”,3,4 despite its long history of woefully inadequate research and lingering stigmas.2,5,6,7 Despite its anxiety-inducing reputation, it’s a completely natural process that most women will go through without severe symptoms or complications.8,9

Understanding what your body is going through and seeing this for the natural process it is is an important step to a more empowered life and menopause journey. Adjusting your perspective and equipping yourself with the right info can lower your stress, ease your symptoms,10 and help you come prepared to better advocate for your needs during this time of change. The more we can shift ourselves and our friends away from harmful, outdated ways of thinking, the better our experience with “the big M” and life after will be.

Rewriting Your Perspective

As you navigate new sensations, biological changes, and relief options, we encourage you to do your own research and take time to unpack any negative feelings or opinions you encounter along the way – it may just change your entire outlook on aging along the way. To get you started, we’ll leave you with this inspirational bit of research to reflect on:

Did you know that menopausal and postmenopausal women may be responsible for increasing the longevity of all humanity?

Most mammals don’t live past their fertile years, so what sets us humans apart? Aside from all the amazing things they accomplished when they were younger, research shows us that our grannies, nannas, and Abuelitas play an important role in helping their communities thrive – both by sharing their lifelong wisdom and ensuring the health of their descendants (by helping their daughters out with grandkids, gathering resources, etc). Because generations of menopausal/postmenopausal women were so impactful on the well-being and education of their communities, the Grandmother Hypothesis suggests humans today have evolved to enjoy longer lifespans (along with potentially larger brains) to ensure grandmas are always there to save the day.11,12 Basically, the amazing women before us may have helped pave the way for longer, happier lives just by being awesome, caring people.

Next time you catch yourself or a loved one feeling down about menopause, remember: it doesn’t represent the ending of your accomplishments, talent, fitness, or value – it’s actually your peak time to shine!
