How to Beat Summer Heat Waves, Youngevity Style

Summer heat waves are here – and they’re no joke. One minute you’re basking poolside, living your best life; the next, you’re feeling woozy and can’t seem to cool down after spending a little too long away from the AC. With record-high temperatures, dangerously hot/humid wet bulb conditions, and heat-related hospitalizations increasing worldwide year over year,1,2,3,4 it’s vital we prioritize our safety and well-being, as well as the well-being of our neighbors.

Here are some easy ways you can stay cool and protect your health this summer, Youngevity style:

Replenish Lost Nutrients

Sweating naturally helps to cool your body, but every time you sweat (which is a lot, especially during summer), you also lose water and valuable nutrients like electrolytes.5 The body needs electrolytes like sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium, to regulate chemical reactions and maintain a healthy fluid balance.6 An electrolyte imbalance or deficiency can lead to pretty serious symptoms quickly, especially when you’re exercising and sweating all those nutrients out, so it’s important to ensure you’re replenishing what you’ve lost. During the summer, keep an extra water bottle or two in the car, and grab yourself an electrolyte drink mix for hiking, swimming, and travel.

Pro tip #1: Have a protein-rich meal or snack and a big glass of water an hour or so before venturing out into the heat or exercising.

Pro tip #2 : Take a collapsible, refillable water bottle to use at bottle refill stations and water fountains.

Maintain a Healthy Weight

Summer treats are okay in moderation – delicious food is part of what makes or breaks a good party, date night, or vacation, after all! But if you’re struggling with more than a couple extra pounds, you’ll need to take extra care during the hot season. Obese/overweight individuals not only expend more energy while moving and at rest, but they’re also more susceptible to heat stress.7,8 Basically, the more extra weight you’re carrying, the more energy it takes to move your body (generating extra heat)9 and the more heat you store (like wearing an extra layer of clothes).10 This can catch you off guard when a heat wave hits, causing all kinds of unpleasant, debilitating symptoms.

The best way to play it safe is to maintain a healthy weight, which you can do naturally by staying hydrated, sticking to Dr. Wallach’s Good Food vs. Bad Food list, supporting healthy GLP-1 production, pursuing calorie restriction with our YFast Intermittent Fasting Program, and stop eating late-night snacks. In the meantime, tips in the next section can help you stay cool as you pursue a healthier weight.

Cool Cooking

This one’s common sense, but takes a little creativity and dedication to bring to life – just avoid foods or drinks that make you hot! If you can’t resist spicy food, we totally get it; maybe save your favorite spicy recipes and snacks for when you know you’ll be indoors with AC all day. Those fun summer cocktails can also make you feel hot, so avoid or limit alcohol if you can.11 If you don’t have AC, we recommend prepping cold meals (think fruit salad, coleslaw, veggie wraps, Caesar salad, etc) or waiting to use your stove/oven until it’s cooler at night. You can also cool down by adding extra water-dense fruits and vegetables to your diet; try watermelon, strawberries, pineapple, tomatoes, bell peppers, papaya, broccoli, and kiwis.12

Most of your favorite Youngevity mixes can also be enjoyed over ice, in slushy/shake/ice cream form, or as refreshing popsicles/flavored ice cubes, so invest in extra ice this summer and check out our recipe library!

Holistic Refresh

Holistic health goes beyond healthy eating – let’s cool off our diet and lifestyle! Try some light yoga and breathing exercises to balance healthy movement with a cooler body temperature.13 When it comes to skincare, refresh and soothe your skin with cooling essential oils like Spearmint or our menthol-infused skin cream. You can also refrigerate your spa/beauty products and pair them with a cold shower/plunge; cool skin products can tighten your pores, while cold showers/plunges lower your temperature and may help bolster other areas of health.14,15

If you don’t have AC at home, we recommend building a routine around cool zones that do, like your gym, local library, or shopping center. If you do have AC, host a sample-sharing party or cold food potluck with family or neighbors who don’t to spread the love and better health.

We hope these ideas inspire you! What other ways can you think of to cool off this summer?
