How can you add delicious nutrition to your daily diet?

Look no further than Youngevity’s newest products: Super Greens and FitShake.

If you were to ask any individual whether they believe they’re getting the proper nutrition on a daily basis, many would say they are. An eight-year-old might tell you he ate all his cereal and drank all his milk for breakfast. An adult might say she had a healthy turkey sandwich and potato salad. On the surface, it seems that they’ve taken care of their daily nutritional requirements. Though, looking at the big picture, you’d see there are many essential nutrients lacking from a typical Standard American Diet. You could try to justify eating a hamburger and fries by saying they contain protein, veggies, and grains. While that may be one view, we should also consider how those foods are processed and prepared before they hit our plates. Not the prettiest picture, right? Your body deserves the best nutrition it can get!

Even within recent decades, nutritional standards and food consumption by much of the population has changed. The Oxford Dictionary defines nutrition as:

nu·tri·tion

n(y)o͞oˈtriSH(ə)n/

noun

the process of providing or obtaining the food necessary for health and growth.

Vegetable Medley

However, a burger and fries are considerably far from providing “the food necessary for health and growth.” For starters, a hamburger combo meal is typically high in polyunsaturated fats (vegetable, corn, and soybean oils) and simple carbohydrates (breads, milk, and sodas), both of which provide very little nutrition. Additionally, many protein sources are low quality and contain added hormones and preservatives, which may be harmful to your health.

A Standard American Diet is also very low in green leafy vegetables, which contain many of the essential nutrients necessary for your health. A 2005 study reviewing compliance with the dietary guidelines set forth by the U.S. Department of Agriculture showed that only one out of ten Americans consumed the recommended amount of vegetables. For example, the average American only eats about half a teaspoon of kale per week!

Unfortunately, convincing most of the population to replace their hamburgers and sodas with Crunchy Kale Salads and green tea isn’t going to be easy. Still, promoting small, nutritional changes to one’s daily food consumption may eventually lead to better food choices and improved nutrition, and in turn to better overall health—that’s the goal! This is even more true for athletes and those with an active lifestyle. Through energy exertion and sweat, athletes deplete their bodies of key vitamins & nutrients and require additional protein to enhance the body’s ability to repair and grow muscle tissue. Due to lack of time or poor eating habits, many athletes, or those introducing themselves to an active lifestyle, may not receive the amount of protein they need to allow their bodies to thrive.
